The Golden Jubilee of the Civil Rights Act
Black History Month in NYC – Brooklyn
2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and will make this an especially impactful African American History Month, themed “The Golden Jubilee of the Civil Rights Act.” How is Brooklyn celebrating? Our fine borough will be hosting a variety of activities including author talks, film discussions and more. Take a trip to Weeksville – an institution preserving the history of a 19th community of free African Americans from the era before the Civil War. Join Medgar Evers College for numerous black history programs and films. Even the Brooklyn Children’s Museum gets in on the action with educational youth activities. Head over to the Brooklyn Public Library to visit The African American Heritage Center, or the Flatbush Library to visit the Caribbean Literary and Cultural Center. However you choose to celebrate – you’ll find no shortage of African American History month celebrations, presentations and workshops.
